In 2002, my husband Michael and I began our odyssey of helping seniors think through the future by starting ElderMove Alliance. Over the years we have helped hundreds of seniors like you stay in your homes more comfortably, downsize to new homes more easily, and remain more independent in whatever way you preferred. It’s been a great ride, and it’s one that I want to continue for a long time. I have no plans to retire, but I just had my 70th birthday, so it is time for me to figure out the future of ElderMove Alliance. I’ve been working on just that!
I’m excited to introduce you all to Maggie Wong, my new business partner. Maggie is 39, the same age I was when I started selling real estate. She worked as a public librarian for 13 years in 8 different cities on the Eastside. Maggie understands that accurate information, careful listening, and customer service are the keys to wonderful and worthwhile experiences. Maggie is also going through the same things that I went through at that time in life, caring for the two children she shares with husband Alex while also helping her parents and in-laws work through their needs as they age. She is the meat in the sandwich of the sandwich generation, just as I was. (Or as she prefers, the frosting in the middle of the Oreo.)
I’m teaching Maggie how to do real estate and all about our senior seminars. At the same time, Maggie is bringing her younger viewpoint and much stronger computer and internet skills to the partnership! Her listening skills and strong work ethic have already proven worthwhile. We are both learning to work as a team, which is a big change for me. I have 30 years’ experience doing real estate on my own! I am loving having a partner to not only share ideas but to also learn from.
As Maggie and I have talked about her aging relatives, another thought came up. If you are going to let your family take care of your possessions and your home when you no longer need them, you could make it easier for them by letting them know that ElderMove Alliance is here. We can help the sandwich generation, too!
For at least the next few years, you’ll have both of us to talk to. At some point in the future, you’ll have Maggie. Lucky you!
